WTW? What the water??

Many times black thumbs have nothing to do with skill or luck but with the type of water used.

City water. Use water without chlorine. If it's city water, put it in pitchers or watering cans open tops and let it sit at least 24 hours so the chlorine will disappear.

Well water/hard water. Get it tested to make sure you know what's in it before you give it to your plants.

Softened water. Turn off the water softener when watering indoor and outdoor plants.

Bottled water. Spring water is best. No flavored or vitamin waters.

Distilled water. This has been boiled and cooled and bottled. It's the closest to rain water you can get.

Rain. Yes, please! Put new plants in the ground right before a rain. But go outside and look around when it's raining to make sure that there aren't puddled spots and places that the water is running away from that need to be watered. See this video for more: https://youtu.be/AH4mqqI54aM

Rain barrel water collected from a rooftop.  If you can filter asphalt shingle chemicals out, use for any watering. If not, use mainly for plants that will be enjoyed by bugs, not people.

Gray water from washing hands, taking showers, doing dishes. Use mainly for plants that will be enjoyed by bugs, not people.

Temperature. Most importantly the water temp should be close to the temp of the plants or the soil. If you're watering indoors, fill water containers and let the water sit till the temp becomes the same as the room. If your watering outdoor from a hose that's been sitting in the hot sun, run that water out until it feels cooler before you water your plants oh, so they don't cook.
