Plant now for fall produce

Ok Macomb, Michigan ! Here's first frost dates* for you. We are zone 6ab and won't likely get a killing frost till the middle of October.

10 more weeks or -->70 DAYS<--

You CAN plant a fall garden! Look at seed packets to determine how long it takes the seed to mature. If it's within the 70 day window? Plant it! :)

You can use frost cloths and/or coldframes and/or hoophouses to keep things growing :)

But what to plant? "Cool crops" like leaf lettuce, onions, parsnips, mustard greens, beets, peas, carrots, turnips, cabbage, spinach, kohlrabi, cauliflower, radish, celery, Swiss chard, kale and collards. 😋

But how? Seed radishes and beets along with your lettuce. The shallow-rooted lettuce will grow near the soil’s surface while the radishes and beets will push down into the soil. These root crops will naturally break up the soil, adding air and water space. Plant roots will provide a place for necessary soil microbes to live. Place onion sets among your greens for the same effect.

But where to plant them? Wherever you have any open patches in your garden. Or in containers. Or in raised kitchen garden beds I build for you. Or in old boots and shoes. Or in the pots your petunias died in ;) Just protect from flying and four legged critters....

*last frost dates are at the end of winter
