How many should I plant?

It's hard to know how many seeds to start if you don't know how many plants you want to grow…

and if you don't know how much food each single plant produces it's hard to calculate how many plants to grow…

So here's a couple common crops and what they produce and a link at the end for lots more.

How many tomato plants should I grow?
On average, you can expect to get about 10 pounds of tomatoes from a single plant. Of course, this will vary depending on the variety of tomato you’re growing, as well as the growing conditions. For example, if you’re growing a beefsteak tomato, you can expect to get fewer tomatoes than if you’re growing a cherry tomato. So, if you’re looking to bountiful tomato harvest this summer, make sure to plant at least a few tomato plants!

How many bell pepper plants should I grow?
The main factor in how many bell peppers to expect from one plant is the size of the bell pepper plant. A bell pepper plant can vary greatly in size depending on how much time the plant has had for vegetative growth before fruiting.
Expect anywhere from 2 to 30 bell peppers from a single plant grown outside at home.
The main cause of poor bell pepper yields is a lack of growing time. A bell pepper plant started outside with only 3–4 months to grow and produce fruit is likely to only grow to about 1.5’x1.5′ and produce only a couple of bell peppers.
Bell pepper plants in greenhouses have a longer growing season than bell pepper plants started outside. They are pruned and trained up twines and regularly grown with two main stems that will reach over 10 feet tall. Greenhouse bell pepper plants can produce around 12 bell peppers per plant.

How many cucumber plants should I grow?
The average number of cucumbers per single plant is 10, but it is important to note that this can vary depending on the
type of cucumber plant, the
variety of seed used, and the
growing conditions.
Some varieties of cucumbers, such as bush cucumbers, have a lower yield per plant, while others, such as vining cucumbers, can produce a higher yield.

How many strawberry plants should I grow?
How many quarts do you want in the growing season? With the right conditions and care, one strawberry plant can yield an impressive harvest of up to a quart of berries or more!
A single strawberry plant will produce between 40 to 70 berries across the season depending upon the variety selected. This equates to a weight of between 1.5 to 3.0 lbs (0.7 to 1.4 kg) of fruit.
