Small Space Gardening

"I want to grow my own food and eat healthy but:

  • I don't have a big backyard for a garden!

  • I live in a condo and they won't let me plant things in the ground!

  • I live in an apartment and there is no dirt anywhere!"

Yes you can grow your own food in small spaces!

Shout out to Angela in NJ who had these questions for me!

A sunny spot is best but greens like lettuces, kale and Swiss chard don't mind some partial shade as well.

Big veggies

  1. Food grade 5 gallon bucket

  2. Drill holes in the bottom

  3. Add an inch of gravel to the bottom

  4. Add soil.

  5. Ugly buckets can be covered with pretty pillowcases or other fabrics or papers.

  6. Place in sunny area.

  7. Plant veggies and water them in! Use the guide below to decide how many to plant per bucket.

1 tomato vine plant with a trellis

1 tomato bush plant with support

2 pepper plants with support

2 herbs like basil, oregano, parsley, cilantro

3 herbs like chives

Greens

  1. Shallow, 6-inch container

  2. Drill holes in the bottom

  3. Add some gravel

  4. Add soil

  5. Sprinkle greens seeds on top and gently cover with a tiny bit of soil.

  6. Water until they sprout. OR

  7. Add greens starter plants and water in. Don't let water touch the leaves only the soil.

You might even consider the spaces you have for hanging plants!

Keep your containers close to each other to reduce the need for extra water.
