Monarch Trip Snacks

What to feed them in the fall

Monarch butterflies drink nectar from flowers. If your milkweed looks like these - ours - this time of year, they aren't getting fed!

It's important to have flowering plants that they can get nectar from especially as they migrate down south. That includes butterflies coming down from Canada through Michigan.

Question: I leave the milkweed alone but for some reason it does not flower

Answer: That's perfectly ok. Monarch butterflies get nectar from all.kinds of other flowers. They need the milkweed when  they are laying eggs so the caterpillars can eat it. If your milkweed leaves are healthy, they can lay eggs. And if you happen to find eggs or baby caterpillars, those leaves can be used to feed them.

But the butterflies are more likely to notice the milkweed if there are other flowers blooming nearby.

Monarch butterflies need NECTAR in the fall. They go all the way down south in one long trip! They aren't laying eggs in the fall!

Add these perennials to help them out. #monarchbutterfly #fallplantings
