Get Away From It All!

Yes, a homesteader can go on vacation! It just takes a little planning.

Simplify your routine as much as possible to make it easier to care for your homestead.

Find a house/animal sitter and have them over to show them the routine. Make a video or take photos and provide written instructions they can use for when you are gone. Example here: https://youtu.be/fDjL9eiWRAw

Add monitoring cameras and know how to use them and the software. Being able to dial in to verify critical doors are opened and closed, that feed and water are provided, etc helps a lot!

Be sure to check your messages when you are out if at all possible…

Smother as many weeds as possible.
Harvest all that's ripe.
In the refrigerator, store berries in sealed glass containers, ground cherries and tomatoes in open containers and peppers in plastic bags.

Add netting to your berry bushes.

Train random vines.

Prune and trellis tomato plants.

Check the weather forecast.

Water well the day before leaving.

Leave water outside for the animals.

Tender plants can go in the shade. Tell your house sitter how often to water.

Leave pretty bouquets for your housesitter.
