Rain and Squishing

I like cloudy, rainy days for pruning squash and zucchini leaves and squishing squash bugs eggs! I wear a raincoat and rubber gloves and carry scissors and a camera or phone with camera…

Why prune the leaves?

  • Opens plants to airfow

  • Encourages new leaf formation

  • Gives energy to the forming veggies

  • Removes squash bug egg infestations

  • Opens line of sight of flowers for pollinators

  • Opens line of sight for birds to eat the bugs

  • Provides space between plants so squash bugs can't travel as easily

  • Opens up paths to reach the plants

  • My poultry like the leaves :)

Why squish and remove the squash bug eggs?

  • All natural method

  • Don't have to rely on chemicals

  • Each egg that hatches is a new squash bug that will eat current leaves

  • Squash bugs bury themselves in the soil in fall and come out again the next year to torment you

Why do this during a cloudy, rainy day?

  • The sun can't kill you in the rain! :)

  • Your brain and eyes will work better

  • You'll have more patience and do a better pruning and squishing job

  • Gardening is more enjoyable when you are comfortable

  • Photo colors turn out better in cloudy light
